I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this fall, our focus is on the strong trends of the autumn/winter season at Modalova.
The fashion week runways have proven it: the styles and fashion trends of the upcoming seasons will be eclectic, structured, but with a hint of nonchalance.
In our previous posts, we talked about the blazer and the worn-effect leather jacket, both of which will be major jacket trends for autumn.
But another trend has been spotted. This is the workwear style.
So, for this fall, work clothes, straight cuts, ties, and pleated skirts will be in the spotlight.
How to make this androgynous trend your own? How to successfully adopt this style straight out of the 80s? Answers in this article.
Workwear Trend: Work Clothes Reimagined
Inspired by the work clothes of laborers, workwear outfits have already made a name for themselves among the general public. However, it seems that a new fashion momentum has been given to this attire.
During the autumn/winter 2023-2024 fashion week, haute couture and designer houses have reintroduced the codes of workwear. On the runways, straight skirts, opaque tights, cardigans, buttons, ties, and deconstructed suits were in the limelight.
The standards have been revisited to offer a more androgynous and sexy version of the workwear style. The cuts are asymmetrical, the textiles varied, and the looks bolder. Diversity and unisex styles are decidedly highlighted to provide clothing that suits everyone.
While the codes of this style have been updated, workwear garments remain true to the same guideline: comfort.
The Codes of Workwear in Brief
Workwear is therefore making a strong comeback this fall. But among all the trends of the fall 2023 season, one can easily overlook this aesthetic if one is not familiar with its contours.
Let me introduce them to you.
Workwear is influenced by the working-class style. Bikers, lumberjacks, firefighters… There are many workwear looks, but they all share one common point: they embody the very essence of workers from yesteryear. So, we have a “vintage” look where authenticity takes precedence.
Comfort is paramount. Loose cuts, clothes that feel good, functionality, the workwear style is originally more focused on comfort and practicality than on aesthetics. Today, workwear is halfway between the two, yet still adheres to this principle: to wear comfortable clothes. For that, think of cargo pants, overalls, loose shirts, etc.
Last but not least is the notion of durability. One invests little, but wisely, so that the pieces one wears follow them for years. This deeply ties into the notion of simplicity. Workwear-type garments are generally minimalist, so they easily integrate into everyday looks. No superfluous elements, just the necessary aesthetics.
Key Pieces of the Workwear Trend
The Jumpsuit
The jumpsuit brings the aesthetics of the working class to the forefront, but with style. With a more modern touch, workwear jumpsuits are made of total denim or linen, deconstructed or oversized, with patchwork or monochrome designs. In short, they are effortless but always cool to wear.
The Denim Jacket
A classic, a timeless piece that we adore and can’t do without. The denim jacket is surely one of the basics that has lasted the test of time. But above all, it perfectly recalls the codes of workwear. For the fall, and in order to convey the essence of work uniforms and other vintage clothing, opt for a fitted denim jacket, like those from Carhartt, the iconic workwear brand. For a more modern version, look for cropped, oversized, or patchwork denim jackets, etc.
The Baggy Jeans
Another star of the workwear look, denim. Not slim, but wide like a baggy, with large pockets everywhere and cuffs. It reminds us of the 50s in the United States and the work atmosphere, with added style. It can be worn with anything, simply, but especially with ease.
The Pleated Skirt
More contemporary, it perfectly embodies what workwear is in 2023. The pleated skirt is modest yet bold at the same time. It is beautifully crafted by the trendiest designers like Miu Miu or Saint Laurent. Paired with a shirt and a tie, you might be on the verge of overdoing the back-to-school look, but that’s also part of the workwear trend.
Boots
In terms of footwear, we naturally opt for a pair that is robust and durable, embodying the codes of workwear. I’m thinking of a pair of leather boots that would perfectly match denim with pockets, a white crop top, and a bomber jacket. But don’t limit yourself to just one model. A pair of platform loafers elevated by socks and a pleated skirt will also imbue your look with workwear codes.
