The power of real fashion on Instagram

Reels on Insta, the new means of creation

Social media is constantly evolving, in order to ride the trends and stand out from competitors. And even if it means changing their DNA.

Initially designed for sharing spontaneous photos, Instagram has gradually become more “professional”. By adjusting its algorithms, the platform has given more importance and visibility to quality content. As a result, we have seen many trends emerge in recent years, focusing on creating aesthetics that appeal to niche audiences, such as the Parisian style. Because yes, Instagram is now mainly used as a powerful communication and marketing tool to build an audience and grow it in order to achieve financial returns. And for this system to be sustainable, you have to know how to seize and master the trends.

Recently, Adam Mosseri revealed Instagram’s new priorities, notably the increasing importance that will be given to video content. Following this announcement, we have noticed, not surprisingly, a shift in the content of creators, who have turned to creating videos to maintain their visibility and audience. After letting creators express themselves through IGTV, which consisted of simple videos exceeding the 1-minute maximum of the feed, Instagram popularized the use of Reels, pushing for greater creativity and competing with TikTok.

This new format has allowed creators to imagine new trends in video creation. And especially in their editing. In order to make these videos much more dynamic, innovative and catchy (which attracts views), creators have started working on transitions. And these transitions have flooded a particular niche audience: fashion.

Indeed, fashion Reels have become some of the most prevalent and fruitful on the platform. And for good reason, creators who are already part of the fashion world have transformed their content into fashion Reels, and alongside them, new faces have emerged, embracing the game of outfit transitions posted on Reels. With Instagram’s new strategies, creators belonging to this niche have found a new way to express themselves and showcase their lookbooks through fashion Reels that attract thousands or even millions of views. And the results encourage them to continue.

Challenging creators and their imagination, the use of transitions in their fashion Reels is mainly used to present different outfits in different settings. The main idea is to make the transition disappear. Yes, that’s where the challenge lies. We forget the simple cut between two outfits, here we play with movements and poses to create a wow factor with outfits that magically change thanks to invisible transitions. Jumping or not in the city, arm movements, leg movements, head movements, accessory movements… Anything goes to hide a transition and go from a work look to an evening look in a split second.

Playing on the element of surprise, these fashion Reels accumulate numerous views and allow accounts to skyrocket just as quickly as the transitions in their Reels. Like Leeloo, @dressingleeloo on Instagram with 176,000 followers, and Marta Sierra @marta_sierra on Instagram with 1.1 million followers, to name just two. We have seen a real change in Leeloo’s content lately, who, alongside her partner, both working in audiovisual production, now primarily focus on this type of content. Always trying to bring variations to nourish them with creativity.

With their creativity always being challenged in order to stand out, these creators are pushing transitions and editing effects further to showcase their imagination. Duplication and multiplication of silhouettes are now added to outfit and set changes.

Set to trendy music to be more easily visible, it’s a clever mix of creativity and strategy that lies behind these fashion Reels.

Accounts like Marta Sierra’s stand out notably for the quality of her fashion Reels, but also for their tone. Her very pop looks and “overacting” attitude have allowed her to truly stand out, to the point of receiving the Premios Idolo Award in March, recognizing the best fashion content creator, and having fashion Reels that attract an average of a million views, with one of them reaching over 11 million.

Fashion Reels, the new fashion shows for brands?

The strong point of these fashion Reels, unlike photo lookbooks, is to showcase outfits being worn, from different angles and, above all, in motion. In addition to providing a very dynamic aspect for the video, this allows for a precise and concrete image of what the outfit may look like once worn.

Moreover, these videos can showcase, like Leeloo’s content, not only feminine and masculine looks, but also children’s looks. These fashion Reels also offer multiple combinations of pieces to inspire potential customers of the featured brands. And also, outfits worn by couples.

These fashion Reels can also show people “daring” outfits in terms of cuts, colors, etc. and allow individuals to create looks that are a little different from their usual style. They also introduce brands to a target audience that may not necessarily be inclined to buy from them.

Because indeed, brands have understood that these fashion Reels are an incredible marketing tool for them. Having a storefront on Instagram is even more powerful than having a storefront on 5th Avenue! Creators with a strong community allow brands to reach people who may not necessarily be part of their target audience. By being endorsed by “trend-following” creators, their pieces shine in a different way and new audiences are “influenced”, and I say that with all due meaning, to buy the outfits featured in the fashion Reels after seeing them being worn.

These fashion Reels are thus new trend accelerators and can be used to present how to wear overalls or showcase beach bags that will be in vogue soon.

That is how we now see numerous fashion Reels created in partnership with brands or fashion groups. If we take the example of Leeloo, we have discovered various creative partnerships with brands such as Karl Lagerfeld, American Vintage, Tara Jarmon, Calzedonia. As well as major ready-to-wear retailers such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche.

This is a way for brands to offer fashion shows in a different form through fashion Reels.

What do we think about it?

On our side, our opinion is divided into two parts, like the Parisian style. We appreciate being able to discover new outfit ideas and fashion trends. Seeing a garment being worn and in motion really reassures before making a purchase, and even highlights a piece that may not have caught our attention on a hanger.

Regarding the format itself, we like its dynamic and creative aspect, which makes the presentation of looks more attractive. With different settings and varied transitions, there is a playful and surprising aspect that allows us to consume the content.

However, like any trend, we often come across the same effects, and even though the outfits change, we may have a feeling of déjà vu and therefore less surprise regarding the format. That’s why we appreciate it when creators challenge themselves and add that little extra that sets them apart!
